Alexis Leggett: Plato:Class Reading 3

The Nature of art, Thomas E Wartenberg
Art as Imitation: Plato  pg 13

Plato was against art evoking undesirable feelings or emotions.  I could simply not imagine art lacking tragedy.   Due to this viewpoint alone I am unfavorable of Plato.  To me, art is a way for us to reflect.  Art should indeed draw out emotions within the interpreter, whether negative or positive.  I see many films that have brought me to tears.  This did not make me upset at the film, but instead, the films that are able to bring out these emotions in me become my favorites.  I believe if art is powerful enough to evoke such a strong emotion that the artist has indeed created a masterpiece.  For art to be so strong that it can cause someone whom is in a good mood to be reduced to tears is amazing!  We cannot reject the bad in life, we must embrace the good and the bad.  How could one go through life with only art that evokes happiness?  I feel like this could only create a sort of emptiness in humans.  It is human nature to experience darkness and sadness.  If we ignore this we are only starving ourselves of what we are, human.
