Dancing Videoa
Outside Topic 4
In class we were talking about how dance
is a form of art. We watch two very different video clips that displayed dance in
different rituals. The first clip was very creepy and eerie. It involved three Asian
women dressed up in long gowns. All three women acted with unison and expressed
the same emotions. As a class we went through the video stopping every so often
pausing on the expressions on the women’s faces. Their emotions were very
powerful and personally I thought they were filled with pain. We created a
story as a class, but ultimately it was up the perspective of the viewer. The
next video involved Native Americans performing a ritual dance in front of white
men. The tribe was demonstrating a dance that has probably been passed on for
generations. In the dance, many of the women were topless and were dancing
freely. To the men in the tribe they were not fazed by the nudity and continued
on eating and keep the beat to the dance. On the other hand, the white men
have never seen such a thing. They were in essence drooling over the women
dancing and the commander had to keep his eye on the “excited” men. The culture
differences were evident in this clip. Both groups of people were watching the
same dance, but were experiencing different emotions and feelings. How can
people appreciate different kinds of art from different perspectives?
