Communion
Communion is an art form in that Christ used it to symbolize His own
death so that people knew how to receive His grace. Communion is derived from
Latin “communion” meaning ‘sharing in common.’ Communion has the aspects of "kenosis" in that we are to empty ourselves out so that we can consume Christ as
he emptied Himself out for us. Christ emptied himself to the point of death so
that he could make room for us and allow us to have a relationship with our
Heavenly Father. Often when people think of communion the first thing that
comes to mind is the Last Supper in which Christ shared a meal with His
disciples. He broke bread and drank wine as symbolism to what was about to
happen to Him on the cross; the bread symbolizing His body and the wine His
blood. We can participate in this art form in a phenomenological way. The physical aspect of sharing a meal together
gives insight into the bodily and spiritual aspects of eating food.
