“A
man who is eating or lying with his wife or preparing to go to sleep in
humility, thankfulness and temperance, is, by Christian standards, in an
infinitely higher state than one who is listening to Bach or reading Plato in a
state of pride”
I ran across this C.S Lewis quote
and found it to be very interesting and a great reminder. Plato’s name stuck
out to me because we have been studying him, but the meaning behind this quote
was also of significance talking about the state and harm of pride. We made be
able to listen to Bach, one of the greatest and most talented composers who
ever lived, or read and understand Plato, an incredibly difficult philosopher.
If we do these two things in a state of pride, we are not where we need to be
nor in a great state of mind as we might think. It is easy to seek knowledge
for the sake of proving others wrong or for the sake of showing off. It is interesting
that Lewis brings in Plato and esteems him highly. It is evident that Plato has
influenced generation after generation in all areas of life.
