Like Water for Chocolate
Outside Reading 4
Another book I read last semester was Like water for
Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. This is a fictional book that follows the life of
the De la Garza's family. Once again the book was focused around food, but this
time the beauty that comes from the exchange of recipes from generation to generation.
For Tita, the main character, cooking comes natural to her and separates her
from the rest of the family. She expresses her self through the food she makes.
Her family can tell the mood she is from the dish she prepares. Similar to
other artists, she uses the food to communicate her emotions and feelings. When
Tita cooks, it is like an artist painting. Tita says “It was very pleasant to
savor its aroma, for smells have the power to evoke the past, bringing back
sounds and even other smells that have no match in the present."After
reading this novel, my perception of food as an art form changed. I think that
food is better art then paintings. For the viewer the art of food requires more
senses (taste, smell, sight) to be used and can connect with a person in many
ways. The smell can bring someone back in time and bring up emotions they were
once feelings. We have all experienced this at least once.
