Adam Wade- What is Art (Tolstoy) - External Readings #5

I read tolstoy's essay on art, and found it intriguing enough to post about.
Tolstoy's take on art and its nature are extremely different than most theories, especially during his time period.  Tolstoy attacked theories of art that focused on "truth" or "beauty"; he found them to be irrelevant and misguided.  Tolstoy believed art was merely a form of communication; it had to make a connection with an audience member, not reveal truth, not inspire a second reality, merely communicate.  The view is so simple that it's hard to disagree with.  Any other theories on art talk about mystical reactions and processes that occur that are hard to prove or disprove, while Tolstoy's is so basic, its almost factual.
