Outside Reading #3 - Abby Hogge

“The beginning is the most important part of the work” (Plato)

I thought this was a very interesting quote by Plato in reference to art and beauty. It is often at the very beginning of a piece of art that we can understand better the significance and heart behind the work created.  The reasons and maybe the unknown reasons that go into the process of producing art are some that are profound and worth learning about. This reminded me of the lion picture we looked at in class done by a CNU student. It was just a lion, but the heart and spirituality behind the picture it made the work into something different. To people from outside the artists life,  it is just a lion, but for others who seek knowledge about the beginning find out that the meaning of the lion goes much deeper. Through talking to the artist one can see the stages of creativity and development which adds a much deeper significance.
Even without realizing it,  a lot goes into the beginning of a piece of art. It may be thoughts or fears or experiences that lead us to come up with ideas and expressions. These are thus the underlying motives that often direct us to express ourselves in an art form.
