“Food is a sacrament
because all food comes from sacrifice. No matter where you are on the vegan to
omnivore spectrum, all food is made of formerly living things. Each of us must
decide for ourselves where to draw the line, mindful of the fact that all
eating kills” (Bolland).
I have really enjoyed reading blog posts by the author Bolland. This particular quote I enjoyed because he brings up a good point about food. We often think of animals as the only living things that are being killed for the food we take in. However, all food has once been living, so whatever we consume, it is dead and therefore we must take this into consideration when considering what we define our diets as. I have done a lot of eating along a vegan diet and I think that the point Bolland makes is important for the realization that not only animals are killed for our enjoyment. I also like that Bolland refers to food as a sacrifice because throughout the Bible we see this idea of sacrifice. The sacrificing of Ox, bulls, and so many other animals that were considered some of the best to be sacrificed. When people gave of their best it demonstrated their faithfulness and willing obedience to God's commands. So whatever we eat, it has come from sacrifice and I think this is something worth keeping in mind as we thank God for the way He has provided for our nourishment on earth.
