Aristotle said, “Imitation is produced by rhythm, language or harmony either singularly or together." I find this quote quite fascinating because drama is able to hold all these different forms of art together in itself. Growing up, I was never quite attracted to drama. To me, it seemed rather boring. I did not understand why people were so enthralled in it. Even today, I have a hard time getting into the dramatic, yet more and more I am able to see the beauty in it. This class has tremendously helped me to see the unity of the arts and the uniqueness of each expression of art as well. I think that Aristotle's quote here gives a good description of how one can see the unity in life, particularly the unity that drama brings between three different expressions of art: dance, music and poetry. With this understanding of drama, I am able to see the beauty of how it portrays life. Van der Leeuw discusses the idea of the unity of life and drama reflects this well because it is able to capture these three different artistic expressions that we see in everyday life. I am excited to look deeper into drama and how it describes the life we live and the life of the world around us.
