The Top 10 Strangest Philosophies by Ash Grant on Toptenz.net

While I was researching possible philosophical theories to analyze for my research paper, I stumbled upon this interesting blog that lists some of the strangest philosophies. The number one strangest philosophy (as decided by the author) is Solipsism. One who practices the philosophical views of solipsism believes that nothing in the world exists except for themselves. The self is the only real thing in existence. The bizarreness of this philosophy made me want to investigate further. Through further research I was even more amazed at how ridiculously pompous this belief is. Since one that holds these beliefs does not believe any other being actually exists (they are a figment of our imagination), the philosophy cannot be proved wrong. The only one who can prove the philosophy wrong is the self. Basically the solipsist believes, since they are all that is real in the world, that anything else in the world is a matter of their conciseness. Words strictly relate to the self. For example the world pain translates to my pain. How could one be so big headed to believe that they are the only true thing in existence? I have always been a very open minded person and given respect to outside beliefs, but I cannot find it in myself to accept or even understand this philosophy. I compare these thoughts held by the solipsist to someone who may need to be retained in a psychiatric ward as they most likely would be if they expressed to everyone that they met that they are just purely a figment of their own mind, not existing otherwise. In regards to the blog I originally found this philosophy on, I have to agree with the author for the placement of solipsism as number one on the list of strange.
