Reading: Van Der Leeuw, Sacred and Profane Beauty: Music and Religion: Suspension pg 233
Van Der Leeuw discusses suspension in music and how it causes ecstasy within us. He states, "Music, freeing itself from the world, rises up to heaven in silent or occasionally loud ecstasy." This description instantly reminded me of a song we performed in my chorus chapter years ago. The song was called, "Too Tired to Go to Heaven". The entire song is built around suspension. It was by far my favorite song we ever did. Van Der Leeuw was correct in that suspension causes an ecstasy within us. Every time I would sing the song I would feel this euphoric feeling within. There is undeniable power to move behind suspension in music. The building up and release of the voice is truly an incredible feeling.
This is a link to another chorus doing the same song.
