Picasso Quote
Outside Topic 5
While procrastinating on Pininterest, I found two quotes by the
famous painter Pablo Picasso that relate with Tolstoy and Collingwood’s
theories of art. The first quote states “I don't say everything, but I paint
everything.” I think this relates back to Tolstoy’s theory of art as
communication. For Tolstoy, art is all
about getting the audience to understand what the artist is feeling. Picasso is saying that he does not need to
communicate with language; he can express his thoughts through his paintings. The second quote relates more with
Collingwoods theory of expression. He thinks that the purpose of art is solely for the artists benefit. Picasso says, “Painting is just another way of keeping
a diary.” This means that he gets his feelings out through his creations.
People keep diaries to document their lives and to write down exactly how they
felt at the exact moment. Picasso clearly is using his art to express his own
feelings. After reading this quote, I realized that there are some things that
Picasso painted that I will never truly understand. If his art was a diary then
the stroke or dot he made is more significant to him then it is to me. I think
both these quotes demonstrate how Tolstoy and Collingwood’s theories are correct. An artist can be using their art to communicate, but their art is also
away to express their own feelings.
