Personal Choice#3 - Abby Hogge
Sport,
drama, humor, dance, architecture, place and home, the natural world are all
part of a long list of activities and forms of experience that have been
relegated to the periphery of religious reflection, but which once made
invaluable contributions to a human perception that this world is where God can
be encountered, and encountered often.” – David Brown
This sets the stage for Browns point
of view because unlike many, he believes that we can have daily encounters with
God if we so choose to open our minds to this idea that otherwise may seem
counter-cultural. Much of our culture has succeeded in placing God as a far-off
spirit that cannot be reached. Instead of seeing sport, drama, humor, dance,
architecture and nature as part of God’s revelation of himself to us, often
religious and non-religious people see these things as meaningless events in
ones spiritual walk. However, Brown believes that it is through such activities
that we can experience God. Our
encounters do not have to be confined to a church building or to an alter, but
rather can be stretched across every created thing on this earth. This is an incredible mystery but wonderful
reality when we allow our eyes to see people and objects that are labeled insignificant
as significant in our daily walks because they express the ultimate Creator.
