Class Reading #3 - Abby Hogge

In class today we looked at a picture of a beautiful mountainous scene with a human standing in the midst of this wonderful display of creation. It was interesting to look at this picture and see how this human looked incredibly small in comparison to the enormous mountains, trees and valleys that surrounded him. I thought that this paralleled with what we all are here on earth. We are incredibly small beings with less control over our world and bodies than we like to think. We live among a creation that has been designed so perfectly for us. There are many tasks and things we can do here on earth but if we look at the book of Ecclesiastes we will find that all our work and toil is meaningless in this world unless we understand that the toiling of our work is for eternal purposes and that we are here temporarily only for a greater purpose in mind that has already been set. Even though among this mountainous scene, the human is so small, he gets to enjoy the incredibly view and landscape he is experiencing. There are often times in life like this scene that remind us how small we are. It is often through an illness such as cancer that we realize the brevity of life and how small we are in comparison to all of creation.
