Looking at food as an art
form was something that I wanted to grasp more knowledge on over this semester.
Through Babette’s Feast, I feel like I was able to see the significance of the
preparation and sharing of a meal. Babette won 10,000 franks and instead of
using it for herself and for the many needs she may have had, she chose to use
it for the family who had become so dear to her. Most of the film spends time
depicting Babette preparing this feast in the kitchen. It is not just any
feast, it is a feast with the most delicate and coveted foods. Babette spends
hours upon hours in this kitchen preparing this food as she desires to serve
her family and friends in a way they will feel loved. The food that Babette
prepares is beautiful and prepared so carefully and intrically. It is through
this that we can see beauty in food. Beauty not only in the way it is prepared,
but also in the way it is served out of love, and the way it brings people
together. The community that was formed and the conversation that took place at
this table was wonderful and life-giving to this family. All of these things
came from simply sharing a meal together and spending valuable time with one
another over a meal. I think that this depiction in this film helps us
understand better how food can be seen as art and how it can be seen as
something that holds beauty.
