Adam Wade - Architecture Related #3

When we were discussing architecture, Dr. Redick spoke about how a building could take years and years to build.  As a buildings back in the ancient times were obviously not built with machinery, I started thinking about how that could possibly affect the meaning or soul of a building.  A building is a piece of art, but it is also a functional utility.  It serves a purpose.  It is both craft and art.  In modern times, a building can come up in a year or less due to technological advances and equipment that allow for easier and faster construction.  I personally feel like a building built in such a manner has less of a "soul" than ones built in the ancient times.  The time it took to build a gothic cathedral would have given the building a sense of personality or soul.  It seems now buildings are more focused on satisfying a purpose, like skyscrapers, than evoking an emotion through artistic imagery.  A building I build with my hands automatically means more to me than one I simply move into.  It gives a sense of ownership.  A sense of ownership and soul that I feel is lost in modern architecture.
