Outside reading#2 - Abby Hogge

“the dogmatic mistake of equating divinely sanctioned art and beauty, I think, runs deeper still, for ugliness no less than beauty can sometimes meaningfully communicate the divine” - David Brown

This is another quote taken from Brown that I thought went along well with the class. We often go through the day saying phrases such as “I like that” “that is pretty” “that is ugly”. It is interesting to look at what Brown is saying in this statement as he sheds light on the face that we really have little authority and right to sanction something as ugly. What is beautiful to one, may not be beautiful for another but that does not mean that the object is not beautiful. Our tastes and opinions are so vastly different and in a lot of ways our idea of beauty is very limited. Beauty in the eyes of culture has become so conformed and often based on a majority vote. This quote makes me think of my friend who goes to an art school in Washington DC. She turned in a piece of artwork  that she had worked on for months and her teacher did not see any real meaning or significance in it thus giving her a low grade. In the eyes of others however, this piece of art was seen as absolutely beautiful. There was a lot of personal meaning within this piece of art that brought out its beauty as well but the teacher did not ask about this.
