Art as Expression
Class Reading 5
In Nature of Art, R.G Collingwood defines art as an expression. His theory of
art is based on two distinctive claims. They are "a work of art is a purely
imaginary object, which exists only and truly in the artist’s mind and that the work of art is an expression
of the artist’s emotion” (Wartenberg 121). For Collingwood art is solely for the artist and not created for an audience. Art is a way for the artist to express their inner thoughts and emotions.
