Jem Kamran -Heidegger

When I was reading Heidegger, I don’t think I understood what he was talking about. What I got from the reading was that, art can be a thing, while humans, and God are not a thing.  I don’t understand how that is related to art but I think he is trying to make a connection between art and architecture. In class we talked about how architecture is art that is arises from the earth like the temple of Poseidon. It represent the presence of god because it is a “stead fast” building against the backdrop of a violent sea. It is purposely put in the location to represent the power of the deity. Heidegger philosophy reminded me of Tolstoy’s philosophy of art as a form of communication.  In a way a building also communicates the intention of the architecture. Building can tell a lot about how a culture is influenced. Design can reflect not only its purpose but can also reflect the energy of the people. Their ideal, their anxieties, their needs, all are depicted by the place. It defines us. Our rooms for example, are not just a four-wall structure but it reflects of who we are. We have adorned them according to our like, and our needs. The things inside hold a meaning for us.  It may just mean comfort, a place to rest but it is has a meaning nevertheless. Therefore a building can communicate like an art piece would.
