Joel Hagstrom- Zeno of Citium the founder of Stoicism
While I was looking for other philosophers we had not touched on in class, I discovered Zeno of Citium, the founder of the stoicism school of thought. I learned that stoicism is based on the idea that anything which causes us to suffer in life is actually an error in our judgment, and that we should always have absolute control over our emotions. We are supposedly emotionally weak only when we allow ourselves to be. An example that was made in the reading argues that a stoic individual would not feel depressed when someone dies, because it is simply a necessity in life. I feel like the idea of someone living a completely stoic life would make them numb to the world around them. One of the fundamental aspects of living is being able to experience a wide range of emotions and being able to react to them. While I feel like being stoic in certain situations can be beneficial, such as in stressful environments, overall I feel like stoicism takes away from the human experience. I am curious to find what other people think about the role of emotions, and expressions of these emotions play into the "human" experience.
