John Tyler -- Semblance (4-9-13)

Semblance -- Class reading

In class we discussed the term semblance.  According to the Oxford American Dictionary, semblance is defined as “the outward appearance or apparent form of something, especially when the reality is different.”  Nietzsche argues that our sense of order is actually just a dream hidden beneath the reality.  Nietzsche connects his ethics to using the semblance of identity in order to overcome the need to link subjectivity to identity.  This is an interesting thought because it lines up with Hegel’s idea that when we encounter what’s ultimately real we don’t like it.  Since for Hegel, reality is not in the physical, he believes we are deceived by the visible pleasures. The difference between Hegel and Nietzsche is their definition of reality. For Hegel reality is spirit and for Nietzsche reality is the physical.  I would say reality is in both.
