Wabi Sabi was a concept that was covered briefly in class, yet it was one of my favorite lectures.
Wabi Sabi is a concept of content with the simple. To me I thought of it sort of like "Hakunah Matata". It's antimaterialist, antidualist, and focuses on harmonizing with nature, even at the cost of social isolation. All throughout the lecture all I could think of was an animated meercat and wild boar teaching me the ways of Wabi Sabi. It's amazing how when one watches an old childhood favorite disney movie after years without seeing it, one picks up entirely new definitions, meanings and symbols within the animated films. To me, the Lion King pushes concepts like nirvana, or even concepts of Shinto and Zen Buddhism. The beauty of nature and the characters reliance and reverence for it reminds me a lot of Shinto, while the no worries approach, and finding a balance in life reminded me of Buddhist teachings. Wabi Sabi spoke more of a philosophy than a religion, and I loved that. As someone who follows Buddhist principles of meditation but not Buddhist religious practices, I could appreciate the lifestyle of Wabi Sabi. It almost reminded me of asceticism, like a denial of things complex such as technology or stressful things, yet not to starve or hinder the body, but to achieve peace.
