Magic and Art

We discussed Martin Buber's theory on magic in class. He defines the difference between magic and prayer. He says that magic "wants to be effective without entering into any relationship" while prayer "steps before the face into the perfection of the basic word" (Buber). I really found this to be interesting when applying this idea to art. It seems as though art invites one in, therefor initiating some kind of relationship, yet at the same time stands apart from everything else a lot of times, being physically bounded by a frame. If looking at art in that way one could use the word magic. It presents something to the viewer and it is up to them to decide what they determine it to be. Art can certainly be effective on it's own. It exists whether or not someone acknowledges its beauty or not. It is ultimately up to the viewer to determine the magic and beauty within art, it can still be there without their exposure to it.
