Christian Holmes Outside Reading #4

I was reading through a magazine the other day and the ads made me pause and reflect on our conversations on art. As I was flipping through the photo shopped beauty ads, I began to notice that features of the female body have been symbolized and that much of these ads is “art”. The imagery of flowing hair that still maintains volume, perfectly angled legs, and proportioned stomachs have become symbols of power, beauty, and class. These symbols have been combined to form messages and meanings that are oriented towards an audience.
The symbols of power, beauty, and class are inserted into the common space and used as a way to confront and conform the public to a certain view of the beautiful. In this way, the modern person existing in the common space is molded by the new art of a marketed society that creates symbols of the desired citizen and projects that demand on its subjects.
