Christian Holmes Outside Topic #1

I was sitting in Schooners a few weeks back with a fraternity brother of mine named Reid. Both of us are lovers of beer. We have picky tastes and find great pleasure in the obscure, uncommon, and unique tastes in craft beer. When we sat down we kept to our usual tradition of ordering that weeks specialty draft. Every week or two Schooners will tap a higher end craft beer and cut the price really low. That being said, my fraternity brother and I will go to Schooners every Thursday evening or so to try whatever’s on tap that week. As we sat there, sipping on this complex and purposefully brewed beverage, I reflected on the artistry of the liquid in this pint glass. The brewer had a purpose and reason for everything included in the malt. He knew what kind of hops and yeast he would use to bring out flavors and texture. This beer was purposefully designed to communicate a taste, pleasure and general experience to us; sitting in that college bar together. This made me think about the purposefulness of art. The creator of a work of art sets out to make a mutual experience known to his audience.
