Western culture contradicts the idea of Wabi Sabi. While
Wabi Sabi represents simplicity, our culture is based on luxury. We care a lot
about the newest, the material world that wabi sabi teaches against. Our
culture would not stand life of loneliness. We always have sounds people
around. And even when we don’t we try to fill the quietness with noise of music
or television. The sabi component
of the concept is not part of our culture, we don’t usually allow natural
processes of the world take over; instead we use technology to manipulate it.
We don’t even allow the natural process of growing old to hinder our life
style. There are anti aging creams and surgeries and medical operations to
extend to take out wrinkles from our face We are always in defiance to the ways
of Wabi Sabi. I don’t think the concept of wabi sabi works in western culture.
Art can’t be seen through this
concept because our lives do not mimic the life of a hermit.
