John Tyler -- The Bible's Artistic Qualities (4-21-13)

The Bible's Artistic Qualities -- Outside Reading

2 Timothy 3:16

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”

The Bible is the most excellent expression of literature.  God chose to express Himself through man’s ability to write.  Steve DeWitt writes in his Eyes Wide open, “If God didn’t like human art, He never would have used human writers to create literature and call it His word. But He did.  The Bible is a masterpiece of art” (138).  The Bible contains poetry, narrative, letter, song, parable and many other forms of literary genres.  God clearly likes it when we reflect His character by creating beauty.

Ultimately God’s art proclaims what is true about Himself.  I believe that there is no such thing as Christian art.  Art is not either sacred or secular. Rather, every human expression must speak of God either in consistencies or contradictions.  Beautiful art reflects God’s excellence and glory.  It is our privilege to partake in God’s creative nature.
