Juan Diego Marroquin, “I Like Your Shirt!”: Visual Identifiers That Bring Us into Community” Outside Topic 3, entry 8

In class we had discussed how human beings can establish connections and enter into a heightened state of consciousness when they feel connected through a work of art or a common interest. It marks a brief moment where the two people, or more if there are more involved, feel connected and feel part of a greater consciousness. This may sound completely silly but I actually feel quite a heightened sense of interconnectedness with people if I see someone wearing a t-shirt of a band I like. There really is nothing better than someone saying “Hey, nice shirt.” That fleeting moment can be so excellent. I think it largely has to do with how important music is to me. Most of the music I listen to is fairly obscure as well so if a person actually recognizes the art that I identify with so much, it is likely that they understand me on another level too. And in that split second, we connect and we share a consciousness.
