Mary Smith - The Nature of Art - Plato (Class Reading #4)

Plato's theory of aesthetics has long been a theory that people have turned to. But nowadays, this isn't something that is so popular. How can art be defined by a particular aesthetic theory with all these rules and guidelines as to what it is and what it is not? Morris Weitz says that "Aesthetic theory tries to define what cannot be defined in its requisite sense" meaning that it's trying to be explained when it simply can't and shouldn't be. I agree with this because I think art is the last thing in the world right now that doesn't need to be and shouldn't have to be explained. Each person has a different opinion and interpretation on it and why shouldn't it remain that way? Why do we have to constantly over analyze everything? Too many people have spent too much time trying to define it when they should just accept it for what it is, natural.
