Mary Smith - Sacred and Profane Beauty (Class Reading #2)

When it comes to music, it can show us the world. When art can only show us how the world is, essentially, music can do so much more than that. There so many different stages and instruments used in music, and they all have different purposes and tasks. They are meant to bring out emotions, whether it be saddening or brightening. They are meant to tell a story, whatever that story may be. Van Der Leeuw said that "Music expresses the inner essence, the perseity of the world." What this means is that with perseity being that a thing is acting out of its own inner nature, music is exactly what it is, a form of something much deeper than we could ever understand; almost unexplainable. "Music needs no content, because it is itself a world." Music isn't a set exact thing, it's just itself that brings so many different things to the table.
