This is an interview with Bob Dylan that really reminded me of what we covered about Neko Case in class.
Essentially in the interview Bob Dylan says that he no longer can pull from that "wellspring of creativity"or expression. He claims that his early songs were just "magically written" and that he can no longer achieve the same effect.
It was interesting to me as a huge Bob Dylan fan, and a music fan in general that even for possibly one of the greatest song writers of all time, songwriting and musical expression isn't just a science or a skill. It requires something more. It's not just a skill to be honed over time, else Bob Dylan would surely be able to still create that "magic". It's not a science that one can learn. Beauty in music, or "magic" as he calls it, is reliant upon something else, something that can fade just as easily as it comes.
The same went for Neko Case; she said there was a time where she just felt stuck in a rut and couldn't continue to make music that connected with her initial intent, or expression. A magic that faded that she was able to reignite through an outer resource like the novel she spoke about.
