Christian Holmes Class Reading #4

Schleiermacher stated that, “Religion and art stand beside each other like two friendly souls whose inner relationship, if they suspect it, is still unknown to them.” I think this is a profoundly lovely quote. It is quite evident to anyone who studies either the history of religion or art, that the two topics are intimately related and intertwined. Each has impacted the other through its topics and trends. However, this quote begs the question of why. Why has art and religion always been so closely been linked. Perhaps this has to do with art being a physical manifestation and interpretation of meaning and significance. We make art that is powerful and substantial. Religion is the system of directing oneself toward a power that is the utmost. Therefore, art of religion is the manifestation and interpretation of the utmost power, meaning and significance.
