Rachel Hrovat--Class discussion on KALOS
In the second class we discussed the Greek word, kalos and its meaning of "good". Upon further investigation this word has a deeper meaning than just "good". While that is the translation, "good" stands for something "more than beautiful" and then has many words that act as synonyms for good, such as "andsome, excellent, eminent, surpassing, precious, suitable, admirable, beautiful by reason of purity, well adapted to its ends and magnificent". It was during class that Dr. Redick shared with us where this Greek word, kalos was found. It happened to be in a passage of scripture that is known to most found in Genesis. It is this word, kalos, that God used to describe the heavens and the earth after he had created them. How incredible that the description of His creation uses such a simple word with a meaning of great depth. He said that it was good, but in saying this He was saying that His creation was magnificent, that it was surpassing all others, that it was suitable for humans to dwell upon and that the reason it was beautiful was because it was pure. This gives a little insight as we are on this search for beauty during this class. When God called something good and beautiful it was because it was based upon its purity.
