Entry 11- 4/8
Today I was walking through the music hallway in the
Ferguson and I walked past a guy listening to a beautiful opera on his
phone. This guy, named Matt, is one of
my good friends and happens to be majoring in Opera as a student at CNU. While I know what I heard, a beautiful
combination of operatic singing accompanied with a full orchestra, I couldn't
help but think, as I looked at the expression on Matt's face as he listened to
the music, if we were hearing the same music.
I know literally nothing about opera and very little about the study of
music in general, while Matt knows substantially more about the topic. Does our knowledge of the subject matter
affect our interpretation of it? The
same could go for someone looking at piece of art. I know that my interpretation of a piece of
art, as an Art major, is affected by my education in the field. Therefore I would have to conclude that
someone without an education in the arts would interpret a piece differently
based on that lack of education.
