Samantha King - Nietzsche on Love - Outside Reading #4

We didn’t discuss love, but I enjoy the topic of  love, and I particularly took interest on Nietzsche’s theory on love, so I did outside reading on him and found a lot of interesting things, specifically this quote:

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”

In my opinion, I believe that a real relationship between a couple is where they’re not only lovers, but best friends too. I think without the best friend quality, there is no relationship. You should not only always be there for your best friend, but you should be able to talk to them about anything. If you can’t do that with the person you spend every day with and have committed to for the rest of your life, then you shouldn’t have married them. Therefore, I believe that is what Nietzsche’s quote about love means. People aren’t unhappy because they don’t love each other, but are unhappy because they don’t have a friendship. Just because you love someone, doesn’t mean you connect with another person, and most people are only friends with people they connect with.
