Art as a response to spirit

We discussed this concept by Martin Buber who says that "spirit is mans response to his you" (Buber). I think this is interesting in relation to art. One's artistic expression can be seen as a reflection of his you. An artist feels the need to outwardly express something from within in many cases. This something is often times reflections of or interpretation of parts of his spirit. In turn, if one's spirit is a response to his you then art is in fact response to ones you. The you calls upon the artist and the artist in turn calls upon it, in a reciprocal manner. Once this reciprocal aspect is affirmed then the artist is able to create great work based on his inner connection to it. It's interesting to think of art as an expression of ones own spirit, however it is something that makes perfect sense. To appreciate that is truly appreciate art and the meaning within it.
