Joel Hagstrom- Thought and Language
A quote taken from the book 1984, by George Orwell, says, "But if thought can corrupt language, language can also corrupt thought." When we had talked about words in class and the power they have it got me thinking about the influence words have on ourselves. It is interesting to think about words because they are so critical to everything we do. Even though words are not always spoken, they are used to form thoughts in our minds and thus dictate everything we do in life. Having the knowledge of certain words does in fact affect our thoughts. Those who do not know certain words do not have the thoughts that are associated with those words. Words contain a power within themselves because we cannot function without using them. We are dependent on them for everything. Choosing the right words to say to another individual or being speechless, brings with it a wide range of outcomes in life. Like the quote from 1984, language is the one of the few things that can directly impact our thoughts because it is one of the major ways we communicate and function in this world. How else do words exhibit a power over us?
