Music and Tonal Art
Dr. Redick just mentioned the importance of baroque singers being selfless and seeking to contribute to the group as a whole. This concept struck me because last night I went to see a CNU band perform in the Ferguson Center, and I feel the same can be said for those groups. It is important for each musical section, made up of several musicians, to sound like a single instrument. This is achieved through proper tone as well as tuning. There were times last night where these sections failed to sound like one and the result varied from sounding like multiple instruments to an audible dissonance created through a single member being out of tune. This concept can even be broadened, because at one point it appeared that all sections shared the melody of the piece. Rather than blending together and creating a single sound, the various sections seemed to be competing for dominance over the others, and the result was less pleasing to the ears.
