Rachel Hrovat--Cultural Relevatism
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is a phrase which we briefly mentioned during one of our discussions on beauty. As I listened to a song this morning that a friend shared with me, I was struck at how loudly it screamed cultural relativism, in the same way the quote does. The lyrics to the song encouraged the audience to follow their arrow wherever they so chose. The "straight and narrow" path was said to be maybe too straight and if that is the case, the artist was encouraging others to leave that path and pursue whatever was necessary to make their hearts content. I see this happening all around in our culture today. The focus of it all is on you and on the betterment of you and on your own personal achievement. It sounds great, but when it is all about you, it is only possible to satisfy yourself but so much. And therefore, even though for a time you might be satisfied, that feeling eventually dies out. This is the danger of seeing everything as acceptable, but something that is done frequently within the arts and in what we deem as beautiful.
