Professor
Redick asked us to look up Kalos,
Kalos is a Greek word that combines the
meaning of beauty and good. Other than Kalos describing what is beautiful, it
also for the description of morally admirable character and conduct, noble
birth, high social statues, and technically useful things. I question why things like noble birth, high
social statues, and technically useful things are described as beauty because
none of those things come to my mind when I think about beauty. I see beauty as
something that is enjoyable to look at, and I don’t think any of things should
define a person’s beauty.
After discussion Kalo’s, I realized I was
leaving the part of “good” out of my definition. We will discuss philosopher’s
theories on what they believe is “good” art and often, things like admirable
character and conduct, noble truth, and high social statues will define what
good art is, and that will determine whether it is beautiful.
